This is the photo that I'm working from, it is of a young woman and although the photo isn't actually that good to work from it is what you put into the portrait that makes it.
After the initial drawing in with pencil I started at the top of her hair using charcoal.
After most of the hair had been laid in I picked
up some of the charcoal from the hair with my finger and laid it into the forehead indicating the form
there.

of the form of the hair had been put in with charcoal and now I started with the eyebrows and eyes.
The laying in of the features are roughly drawn in
here with charcoal but not necessarily sticking to the pencil lines, it is best to be rather loose and to have freedom of expression rather than following
the original pencil lines.
All the features have been laid in now
and I restate the hair and put in the ear.
