Wet in wet painting and here the highlights down the left side of the nose have been added and more work has been painted in around the eyes including highlights.
All it is now is refining the colours and tones I have already painted in and to add highlights to the hair and beard. As in anything else observation is what it is all about, observe what is happening in the portrait, where the light hits, what colours and tones you see etc.
Here I am going over the highlights in the eyes again that I already painted in making them stand out a little more.
In go the spectacles with a fine brush and pure white paint and it is a good idea to half close your eyes because you can see tones better this way. I can then put in what you want to put in and leave out what you want to leave out.
Here is the finished portrait and as you can see it is lively and interesting rather than all smooth and blended out, keep your brushstrokes lively and don't fiddle. I hope you have enjoyed this demonstration.
