Tonal
figure painting in one colour using just a blue (French Ultramarine)
and
the purpose of this is that you are solely concentrating on tone, there
is no colour to bother about. I first sketched in the figure making sure
I got the stance right.
The drawing is roughly sketched in and I haven't concentrating on any details
here.
I start with watercolour using ultramarine blue and
painting in a basic head shape not bothering about features.
Here I half closed my eyes so I could see the darks better and
blocked them in leaving
white paper for the reflected light down the center of the back.
I
rinse my brush and give it a shake and soften some of the hard edges like the top of the shoulder area and
in this example I'm just about to soften the
area in the center of the back.
Here I'm painting in a darker blue wet in wet into the wet paint underneath.
