Here I sketched the same subject with two different mediums, one
with pencil and the other with watercolour. I did this to show the
differences in the two mediums and there
effects. Both were 10 minute sketches and I thought I would do the
sketches quickly rather than doing them as finished drawings and
paintings. I think when you sketch a subject you can achieve more vitality and
I think you loose some of this vitality
when you spend more time on doing a really finished drawing or painting.

Sketch (1) in pencil,
a loose freehand approach. |

 |
Sketch (2) in
watercolour, still with a loose approach but see how much more
volume you can obtain when using colour. |
Although each sketch only took around 10 minutes to do they both
show the character and alertness of the actor Ian McKcellen, if I
had done a more finished drawing and watercolour they wouldn't have
been as much character or alertness. But saying this when you do
sketches like this you do lose a certain amount of accuracy, in the
watercolour sketch the nose isn't quite wide enough as is the face,
also his left eye looks a bit on the small side. In
the pencil sketch the nose is too long but this is the price you pay
for doing sketches. So the lesson to be learnt here is draw quick sketches
in all mediums but be prepared to loose a little accuracy.
