Sketching in pencilIn this sketching in pencil demonstration I am now drawing in the people and cars and its a busy town centre here so we need to try and make the sketch look busy. << Back

Sketching in pencil

If we look at people as an outline rather than looking at them in detail (eyes, ears and clothing etc) we can use the pencil to suggest a head and a couple of lines for the body, that's all we need to do with no details added. In the example here there are just a few squiggles to suggest people and movement. More detail has been added, did I say detail, yes I did but not detail like blades of grass or whether the name is spelt correctly above the shop canopies. All we have concentrated on here is the largest shapes down to the smallest shapes and not even thinking about details. The buildings are in perspective, there is no brickwork showing, there is no tone but you know what this sketch is all about, a busy street scene on a Saturday afternoon.

Sketching in pencilHere is the finished sketch with more people added and at first you might look straight at the buildings and then gradually look down towards the people. Apart from the buildings which were sketched in with good perspective which is what is needed here everything else is only suggested, its like sketching an impression of what is in front of you rather than concentrating on tiny details.

So sketching in pencil is all about an impression and the more of an impression you give the drawing the more sketchy it will look. A good sketching artist always has freedom in his mind, freedom to do whatever it takes to get down on the paper what he intends to do. Sketching is about being bold, being free and drawing marks on the paper that suggests rather than to be exact. When you are experienced in sketching you get to a stage where your pencil wants to take off without you, it wants to dance over the paper, so let it go, be bold and give your artistic license the freedom to do what it wants to do...sketch.
