Sketching a Train

In this sketching a train demonstration the train is travelling uphill and turning towards us. I first Sketching a trainsketched in the dial shape at the front of the train and drew a diagonal line down its centre to get the angle and tilt of the train.

Sketching a trainThe smoke billowing out of the funnel was next so no careful drawing here! I just tried to follow its outline and the shapes the smoke makes which are rather like cloud shapes, so if you can draw clouds you certainly can draw smoke. The bumper bar goes in now making sure that it is at a contrasting angle to the diagonal line I put in earlier.

Sketching a trainMore smoke is added here concentrating on the shapes it makes and I added a little bit of tone at the base of the smoke at the top of the funnel, dark tone has been added under the bumper bar making it come out to us a bit more.

Sketching a trainMore work has been added here like shading under the dial shape of the front of the train and the track that the train is running on has only been suggested here. A little more work on the shapes of the smoke and a suggestion of carriages has been added.

Sketching a trainCarriages have now been added with just a suggestion of windows.

Sketching a trainHere is the finished train sketch with a suggestion of wheels under the carriages and you get a sense that the train is huffing and puffing up an hill and heading towards you. No background has been added here or details which would detract form the sketch and this is all it is a quick sketch of a train climbing up the hill. Buy the Sketching CD here >>
