 Sketching a ship

In this first quick demonstration of a series of three sketching subjects which are a ship, a Sketching a shiptrain and a bridge, the first one is sketching the bow of a ship. As with all sketching and drawing good observation is needed.

Sketching a shipIt is best to start a sketch or a drawing for that matter with whatever hits you first, here the front bow of the ship hit me straight away so this is where I started. In this type of sketching I cant really let myself go because this is a demonstration for you of a subject to show you basic sketching but in later demonstrations I will show you pure sketching not confining myself to the subject matter.

Sketching a shipHere the mast and rigging of the ship have been sketched in and the best way to get straight lines for the rigging is to deftly and quickly and also accurately put them in, it takes practice so maybe a little practice on a different sheet of paper might help.

Sketching a shipHere other bits and pieces of the ship have been sketched in and the point here is not to get carried away with details, just suggest what is there and no more.

Sketching a shipHere is the final sketch and just a little bit of shading has been added to the bow of the ship, one or two windows have been added on the cabin and also a suggestion of water. Even when sketching a bow of a ship you can have a centre of interest and the centre of interest for me here is the area around the cabin, so here I added a few dark tones and accented a dark line alongside the ship's bow, can you see that the front bow of the ship now seems as though it is sailing right out of the picture.Email me
