Sketching a lion and here I start to draw in with pencil the lions ear to
start
off with and the pencil lines are just a guide and I probably wont keep to
these lines when I start to use charcoal.

Getting the alignments right for the features is important, if the
structure of these aren't right then the sketch will fall apart so the
alignment of the ears and eyes are essential in getting the sketch right.

With just a rough pencil drawing I then start using charcoal and starting
at the same point I started when using the pencil.

I picked up the dark charcoal of the ear and hair from the paper with my
finger and used this to put in middle tones of the face. The darks of the
nose have been put in but the actual subtle shapes of it haven't been
sketched in yet.
The
other ear and eye have been laid in and now the structure is coming on fine
here.

More middle tones have now been put in so as the eyes and the left pupil.
