Sketching Ian Mckellen and when I'm sketching I look at the photo or the
live subject and start anywhere where I feel I want to go first. Here
I
started at the top of the head and worked downwards. I gauged the
distance from the hairline down to the eyebrows and if you keep your
hand moving all the time you can feel these distances.

Making sure the alignment of the eyes is relevantly correct and as
you can see here I have started to put dark tones in the eyes.

I work all over the head not just concentrating on one part, keep
everything going at once. Here I moved on quite a bit sketching in form
and wrinkles, putting in more darks and you can see I have moved all
over the head trying to keep everything relative.

The hair was put in by following the form of it with my pencil
strokes and very little shading has been put in only places where I
think it needed it. The ear was dark against the white of his sideburns
so I shaded this in.
Here
he had is hand up to his chin so I sketched this in keeping it quite
simple and not putting it in with detail. (Fingernails etc)

Sketching is all about being free from preliminary lines that you may
have put in first. When you are sketching you don't bother about
preliminary lines you just get on with it concentrating on freedom of
line and vitality
