Pub painting in watercolour and this is a sketch which took around half an hour to do and below is the photograph that the sketch will be from.
I started sketching in with pencil and began just below centre as there will be more land area than sky in this demonstration.
Here the windows have been sketched in and also the tree on the right.
More of the buildings are added and another tree on the left. The road leading up to the pub is important, it's no good using two vertical lines leading up to the pub, it is best using curves and here the leading lines go up to the pub in a pleasing way.
Logs have been added to the left of the road side and these help to lead your eye up to the pub. The bottom of the left tree looking at the photo merges with the horizontal line at the bottom of the buildings so to create depth I elongated the tree so it is lower. If you can imagine a stage
set and that there is a front curtain and at intervals there are other curtains receding back
until you get to the last curtain at the rear of the stage you can get the idea of receding planes and this is how you achieve depth.
