In this portrait oil painting the background is painted in with the same three colours, cobalt blue, yellow ochre, cadmium red and white with more cobalt and ochre in this mixture to make a grey green.
Notice the background strokes are lively and not all in one direction, when you place a stroke on the canvas leave it there, don't fiddle with it otherwise it will loose its freshness. A cool blue grey has been added to his whiskers.

All the background has been painted in with a variety of tones, middle tone greens and greys. His shirt is painted in using yellow ochre and where the tip of my brush is in the photo this is where the bottom of the photograph is so I need to be a bit creative here to finish off the bottom of the portrait. Some of the highlights like to the left side of the nose have been added just to cover up these areas, later they will be put in lighter and thicker. With all the colours added now and the canvas covered modelling is taking place with reflected lights and modelling around the features to bring them out more so you can see that they are there.
The portrait is now a little more like Mr Ford simply by adding reflected lights on the right side of his face. All it is now is to observe what is happening in the face and to try and capture the essence of his features and place them onto the canvas.

Highlights are added to the portrait like at the bottom of the lip, neck area, nose and shirt with simple stokes, once the colour has been laid on it is left with no fiddling.
