Portrait of the Queen Elizabeth a demonstration in painting a portrait of the Queen Elizabeth

Portrait of the Queen elizabeth

In this portrait of the Queen Elizabeth the painting has been painted on a dark grey brown cancion paper and painted with Windsor and Newton pastels. Here I am drawing in the basic oval shape of the head with a light cerulean blue because if I used a darker colour it would be difficult to see my lines both for me and you.

Portrait of the Queen elizabethShade has been painted in with the same light cerulean blue to show the light and darks of the portrait and also I roughly painting in the features of the face using this same colour.

Portrait of the Queen elizabethWarm skin tones now go in starting with the forehead and working down the portrait and using a medium cadmium red and all I am doing here is adding colour to the medium toned areas with the flat part of the pastel.

Portrait of the Queen elizabethMost of the medium toned areas have now been added and I have started to use a darker cadmium red down the left side of the face here as a basis for more darker tones later on. It is a matter of roughly painting in tones and colours even if they aren't exact just to get us going and to get something on the paper. The same blue colour has been added to the bulbous end of the nose because this area looks cooler.

Portrait of the Queen elizabethDarker umber brown's are added to the right side of the face and the shadow part of the nose over which cooler dark blues will be added so these areas will then recede.
Portrait of the Queen elizabethSlightly darker cadmium reds have been added all over the face now to describe the tone and colours a bit more accurately and the lips have been painted in with a darker cadmium red over which a grey medium tone might be added to mute them later. A little bit more detail has been added to the eyes above and below them.
