Portrait of an old man in charcoal and if you want to have a go at drawing this portrait right click the photo and click save as and save it to your hard drive. Don't forget where you saved it.
In this demonstration I am not doing any preliminary drawing with the pencil I'm going straight into it with charcoal and starting from about four inch from the top of the paper I start to work on the top of the head and work down the portrait.
Once all the basic features are roughly drawn in with charcoal I then start on the tone so half close your eyes and see how dark the tones are here on the photograph.
The eyes are the most important feature in a face so this is where I start to lay in tone, the nostrils and eyebrow's are laid in but what you cant see in this photo is the hair on the right where I have laid in a bit of tone and I scooped this tone up with my finger and laid it down the left side of the face for a middle tone to the face.
Working all over the portrait and adding tones which I pick up with my finger from dark tones I have already laid down, these areas where I do pick up charcoal can be drawn over later. A few lines have also been added to describe the hair form.
Working on the beard now and following its form with my charcoal strokes and here I might leave some white areas showing (White paper) through the charcoal to add texture to the drawing.
