Portrait pet painting with colour

In this portrait pet painting with colour demonstration I show how I measure angles and relationships by holding the pencil vertically at certain points in the photograph and transferring these angles to the portrait.

In the previous example I was measuring the vertical angle from the eye to the side of the nose, in this example I am trying to get the horizontal angle of the eyes.

Portrait pet painting with colour

Here everything is made darker using the same colours, a dark burnt umber and a medium burnt umber, even the nose was put in with this colour and then painted over with a dark cerulean blue to get the right colour. A certain amount of blending with my finger has produced a softer feel to the portrait and the left eye has only been suggested at this point.

Here we have gone quite far in the portrait, more of the body of the dog has been painted in and more blending has taken place where it needs it, some areas are left hard edged and some areas are left very soft to achieve variety of tone and colour. The left eye has had more detail put in and the left ear has been softened and brought out a bit more by using dark accents.

All the dog now needs is some paws but at the time I painted this portrait I decided not to put them in, but now when I look at the portrait three weeks later I think it does need them, maybe if I put in an horizontal ledge with the paws hanging over it, it would look better...Hope you have enjoyed this pet painting with colour demonstration.
