| | | Portrait Artist from Liversedge a short biography of this portrait artist |
Portrait artist Roger Simpson was born in a small town called Earlsheaton in West Yorkshire England and as a child of around ten years old all he wanted to do was draw things and doodle on bits of paper, even at school he was always drawing instead of learning maths or some other subject. As Roger got older there was only one thing that he wanted to do in life and that was to draw, often his dad would say to him that he has golden hands and said that he should go to college and learn to be an artist. See an introductory Video by Roger the artist. Later on in life he took his dad's advice and off to college he went where he studied at two art schools one of which was at Batley art school, it was an old school with some reputable artists but Roger didn't feel it was quite right for him there, their was drawing and painting classes sure, but in some classes he had to do collage and pattern making which Roger wasn't really keen on. He just wanted to draw and paint life, like drawing someone's portrait or going out in the countryside to paint an old barn or something, so later he left Batley art school and went to another art school which was at Dewsbury art college.
| Dewsbury College | Portrait artist Roger never bothered taking any exams both at Batley and Dewsbury simply because he wasn't interested in them. All he wanted to do was to draw and paint, all the same he learnt quite a lot there like form, structure and drawing and painting techniques. After three years at Dewsbury art college he started exhibiting his work at local art galleries and managed to sell quite a few and in 1977 a gentleman bought a portrait which Roger had done from a local gallery of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. | The gentleman bought the portrait for twenty pounds which Roger was quite happy about because it was the first portrait that he had ever sold. The gentleman wanted 500 prints from the original portrait to give to charities around the world but first the gentleman had to get permission and copyright from his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The gentleman received the copyright from the prince and so throughout the world there are five hundred prints of Prince Charles which Roger is quite proud of. More>>Read more about...
