Portrait artist Roger Simpson was born in a small town called Earlsheaton in West Yorkshire England and as a child of around ten years old all he wanted to do was draw things and doodle on bits of paper. Even at school he was always drawing instead of learning maths or some other subject. Often his father would say to him that he had golden hands and that he should go to college and learn to be an artist. Later on in life he took his father's advice and off to college he went where he studied at two art schools one of which was at Batley art school, it was an old school with some reputable artists but Roger didn't feel it was quite right for him. Their was drawing and painting classes but in some classes he had to do collage and pattern making which Roger wasn't really keen on. All he wanted to do was draw and paint life, like drawing someone's portrait or going out in the countryside to paint an old barn or something, so later he left Batley art school and went to another art school which was at Dewsbury art college. | | More >> My studio >> My self portraits >> Old drawings/paintings >> Early figure drawings >> Hobbies and Interests>> Intro-Video by Roger >> Home
| Roger never bothered taking any exams both at Batley and Dewsbury simply because he wasn't interested in them. All he wanted to do was to draw and paint, all the same he learnt quite a lot at Batley art school like form, structure and drawing and painting techniques. After about three years at Dewsbury art college he started exhibiting his work at local art galleries and managed to sell quite a few. In 1977 a gentleman bought a drawing for twenty pounds from a local art gallery of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (Below left) which Roger had drawn and Roger was quite pleased with this because it was the first portrait that he had ever sold.
