Portrait artist
Roger Simpson was born in a small town called Earlsheaton in West Yorkshire
England and as a child of around ten years old all he wanted to do was to draw
things and doodle on bits of paper. Even at school he was always doodling instead of learning maths or some other subject. Often his father would say to him that he had golden hands and that he should go to college and learn to be an artist.
Later on in life he took his father's advice and off to college he went
but after a few weeks he left, all he wanted to do was to draw and paint, I
had to do collages and pattern making and this was something I didn't really
want to do. So he decided to go to night school where there were life
drawing and painting classes and one such college was at Batley, where he
was there for two years and learnt quite a lot there like form and structure
of the body, he then moved on to Dewsbury art college which suited Roger
better because it was larger and a bit more freer to do what he wanted to do
which was to draw and paint the human form, he was there for three years, He
loves to draw and paint the human form or drawing someone's portrait, he
also goes out into the countryside whenever he can to draw and paint.
Roger never bothered taking any exams both at Batley and
at Dewsbury simply because he wasn't interested in them, all he wanted to do was to draw
and paint and later after leaving Dewsbury college he started exhibiting his work at local art galleries and managed to sell quite a few. In 1977 a gentleman bought a drawing for twenty pounds from a local art gallery of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales which Roger had drawn and
he was quite pleased with this because it was the first portrait that he had ever sold.
A word from Roger,,,I think it is good to read books on art, I used to go into libraries
quite a lot and read books over and over again to get the information I
needed into my head. It is also good to practice, practice and practice if you want to make it
out there, there is no other way.......
