Pencil drawing tutorial continuing stages in this pencil drawing tutorial

Pencil drawing tutorial

In this pencil drawing tutorial more shading is now added and I am now really trying to get a likeness but the tones are still only at half the intensity as yet. The features have been defined more by making them darker and I have tried to make the overhaul portrait more accurate.

Pencil drawing tutorial

Once we have decided on the distance between the head and the hands and we can do this by holding a pencil vertically on the photograph and measuring from the top of the head to the chin and then from the chin to the hands and transferring these measurements to our drawing. Observe the tone and shape of the hands and how the hands overlap each other as though the left hand is resting on the right one which it is.
Pencil drawing tutorialNow putting in the bodice of the Mona Lisa and paying particular attention to the shoulder and making sure it looks right and not as though its unrelated to the rest of the portrait. The shading is still at a medium tone throughout the portrait as yet and the darks will gradually become darker as we go on.

Now we are developing the background area and making references all the time to the photograph and always thinking of tone, the darks, middle and light tones and all the small nuances in between these tones.

Pencil drawing tutorialI'm concentrating more on the background now and looking for the largest shapes that stand out and to shade these in lightly first and then onto the next largest shape. Once you have established these tones and shapes you can then go darker like we have through the entire portrait, it now looks more darker and more powerful as in the original portrait.
