 Pastel sketching

Pastel sketching John Wayne which is only a quick Pastel sketchingsketch that took around 30 minutes. Pastel is an ideal medium for quick sketches and here I started to use a medium burnt umber colour and started to get the hat and head in.

More marks are roughly painted in to indicate where the features of the face are. It is good to be bold and quick and maybe set a time limit of 30 minutes to see what you can do.

After I toned in the shadows of the hat I went straight in with colour using light pinks. As I was painting I noticed his blue eyes so I put them straight in. There are various ways in painting and one of which is to get all the darks in and work up to the lights but here I just worked in any way I saw fit and not holding to any particular doctrine.

More pinks and creams were added and a light blue was used for the highlights. The crimson colour was painted in for his scarf but will later be toned down and it is a good idea to start with bright colours, you can always tone them down either with a less intense colour of the same colour or with greys. Here I put the crimson colour in but look in later examples what I used to tone it down.

Pastel sketching

The mouth area has been painted in and and a few highlights on the nose and forehead and generally I am just picking areas out and painted them in.

Pastel sketching

All the face has now been roughly painted in and don't worry about lines and marks which go astray like the lines to the left of the hat, these all add to the painting and are part of it.
