Painting petals and leaves

Painting petals and leaves in watercolour and the main thing here is to get the energy and Painting petals and leavesvitality of the flowers so good observation is needed to observe there shapes. Here more petals were painted in and at the same time in went the leaves, on the photograph the leaves were all over the place which didn't look too great so I tried to make a better composition out of the mayhem. The rose on the right didn't help the composition much so I only suggested this flower and kept it muted in colour.

Painting petals and leaves

The white flower under the main flower juts out into it so I painted gaps into the white flower.

Darker reds have been painted into the medium toned reds and are softened a little by rinsing my brush and drying it slightly to soften the edges of the darker colour. Other less significant flowers were added and weren't really clearly defined.

Darker greys were added to the white flowers which aren't really white but an off white. Darks were added to the rose on the right.

Painting petals and leavesIn go darker shadows for the leaves using ultramarine blue and cadmium yellow.

I find long handled brushes too cumbersome and awkward to use so I break them almost in half and are then a lot more comfortable to use. So if your the same then be bold and go for it, get them snapped off!
