In this painting of a man with a beard tutorial I carried on painting in a medium light colour for the middle tones of the hair with a lighter version of the same colours burnt umber, white and with a touch of yellow ochre.
Shapes go in for the beard observing the form using a touch of ultramarine blue with burnt umber and white, notice I am using burnt umber all the way through the portrait, this will help to harmonise the portrait.
More form goes into the forehead, I try to keep my brushstrokes lively and interesting, I usually try to avoid following the form exactly with my brushstrokes so as not to make the form look wooden and instead look for little deviations so I can add variety.
After roughly dabbing in the eyes with burnt umber and ultramarine I started working around them adding form and light and shade.
More tones and colours are added and I also concentrated on areas I have already painted in working over them again till I got the colour and tone that I wanted.
Here I was painting in wrinkles but being careful not to go overboard with them, more form has been added and a little blending but not too much. What we want here is a lively oil painting.
