Painting features in pastel

Painting features in pastel and we start off with the mouth and here it is of a young woman smilingPainting features in pastel. The demonstration has been done on a dark background so you can easily what is happening here. I first used a cadmium red just to indicate the mouth shape

The teeth area was painted in with pure white and blended with my finger. To judge where the teeth need to be or where each tooth joins the next one I look at the two front teeth first and align the join with my pencil held vertically to say the right corner of the left eye, this obviously depends on the tilt and angle of the head.

All the joins are roughly and pretty accurately painted in with the same pinky red colour. It is important to determine the angle of these joins, they aren't always Vertical, some are more diagonal and this again depends on the tilt of the head.

The joins are made darker and observing carefully which joins are darker. A cool blue grey colour has been added under the top teeth because here the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth so this will throw a shadow on the bottom teeth. I painted in a fleshy tint around the mouth because a mouth on its own doesn't look like much.

The finished mouth and here it is only a sketch and could be developed more but you can see that it is a mouth and that everything is correct.
