Painting butterflies are never easy to do because they have so many different subtle colours and markings. Here is a sketch in watercolour on Cotman 140llb paper. To start it is best to try and get the angle of the butterfly's wings before anything else, from its upper wing to the lower one, putting this on a diagonal line.
You can get correct measurements by holding your pencil up vertically at say, the tip of the butterfly's wing and align this with say the left part of the butterflies body.
Here is the full drawing of the butterfly although I haven't drawn in any markings which I could have done but I feel confident about painting them in. If you feel confident enough not to draw in every little detail then go ahead, it can be testing but if you succeed then it gives your confidence a real buzz.
So here I went straight in with a yellow ochre for the butterflies body.
Working wet into wet I added some cerulean blue and burnt umber to the yellow ochre where appropriate to the butterfly.
Here I started on the markings and as I said earlier if you feel confident enough not to draw in details first by all means go for it.
