Painting an ear and here I started off with an oval shape using a light coloured pastel on dark paper so you can better see what is happening.
The inner shape has now been painted in and which doesn't exactly follow the outer oval I first drew in so you need to watch for these deviations in shape. I then drew in the inner circular shape so here we have three stages, one the outer oval shape, the inner shape which nearly follows this shape but not exactly and then the circular shape inside these shapes.
I started blocking in colour and really just blocking it in as I see fit. I added the small highlight on the lobe of the ear as a marker so I knew that I had to add colour above this.
Lighter tones of colour go in now and blending them in where it looked soft but keeping some areas hard, you don't want all smooth blended areas. Some areas of colour need to be blended into adjacent colours and some colours need to be hard next to an adjacent colour and this is true with line, some lines need to be seen and some can be soft and blended.
The finished ear and more highlights have been added here and I used a pastel pencil to accentuate some of the lines to bring these areas out more.
