Painting Sylvester Stallone and although
the photo here been taken head on and there isn't any really good light and
shade this is a bit of a challenge.
In painting a head on view like this it is more
difficult in getting a three dimensional effect. After the initial
sketching in with pencil and making sure all angles and the structure
was right I then
started to paint.
Not
exactly keeping to the pencil lines I started with a mix of ultramarine
blue,
yellow ochre and cadmium red mixed with plenty of water went in, you can see by
the puddles at the bottom of the wash that there is plenty of water here. You
can never get good blends from one colour into the next without using a lot of
water in your mixes.

When the first wash on the face is dry I then block in the hair with
ultramarine and burnt umber.

Once all the hair has had a first wash and that the wash of the face
is dry I started to add middle tones down both sides of the face with a
darker mix of the same colour and then
rinse my brush and pull out these tones into the cheeks achieving a
soft blend.

The eyebrows and eyes go in now with a dark ultramarine blue and
burnt umber mix and the top lid and the eye lenses go in with the same
mix and stroke.

A second darker wash of the same colour for the hair goes in leaving some
of the first wash untouched for the middle tones.
