Mounting and framing a black and white picture tips in mounting and framing a picture

Tips in mounting and framing a black and white picture and the first thing you need is a good picture framer. Art shops, private picture framers, photographic shops all do picture framing and to know which is the best frame for your picture takes a bit of knowledge so here are some good pointers.

Picture mounting

Mounting and framing a black and white pictureHere the mount is too dark for the portrait but has the correct amount of white space.

Mounting and framing a black and white pictureThe mount is still a shade too dark for the portrait and both are the same tone.

Mounting and framing a black and white pictureThis mount is lighter than the portrait and compliments it very well.

So to sum up: If it is a pencil drawing that you are mounting and framing then your mount needs to compliment the portrait both in tone (Light or dark) and in size (Width of the mount all way round). A grey mount is preferred to match the grey of the portrait rather than introducing a coloured mount.

Picture framing

Mounting and framing a black and white pictureThe frame is too yellow, stick to grey's for a grey picture, coloured mounts for a colour picture.

Mounting and framing a black and white pictureThe frame compliments the portrait but there's no contrast between frame and mount.

To sum up relate the tone of the frame to the tone of the portrait, never use a darker frame than the actual portrait, the same is true for mounting. Here you could also use a wider frame than the width of the mount.

There are different ways you can mount and frame a picture and this is just one way. You could of course use no frame at all and just use a mount or you could dispense with a mount altogether and just have your picture framed, but I always think that any picture looks better both mounted and framed.
