Matt and frame a colour picture

Matt and frame a colour picture an example would be a pastel portrait which will already have a coloured background, (rarely is a pastel portrait done on white paper) you have to choose the right coloured matt and frame for the portrait, below are a few tips.

Matt and frame

Using the same coloured mount and same tone as the background of the portrait isn't a good idea, there is no contrast.

Here I used a pinkish coloured mount which relates to her skin tones and is lighter than the background giving contrast.

Framing

See the difference when you don't add a mount and there is hardly any contrast between the background and frame.

Here both the frame and mount have been added. The frame is roughly the same colour as the background, hair and scarf which harmonises well. Also the frame contrasts in tone against the mount.

To sum up: Relate the colour of the mount to the skin tones in the portrait and contrast the tone of the mount against the background of the portrait. Add a slim frame not as wide as the mount, here the frame is darker than the mount again giving contrast. Contrast in colour, tone and size of your mount and frame is the key to successful mounting and framing of a coloured picture.
