Light and darks
(Chiaroscuro) are added into the bushes in front of
the
buildings and the foreground hayfield has some darks for shadows of the darker hay.
These shadow areas are softened by rinsing my brush so that it is clean and wet then while the shadow areas in the hayfield are still wet I soften some of these areas.
The darks of the buildings are made darker and the trees seem to recede more now.
When the shadows of the buildings are dry I can paint in the window in the shadow side of the church. This hasn't to be too dark otherwise it would ruin the shadows already there. A flagpole is added and while there wasn't a flagpole in the photograph I thought that it needed one somehow so I put it in.
The finished sketch and it shows what you can do in half an hour.
Detail of the church area and although the shadow side of the church bled out a little it doesn't detract from the painting as a whole. I hope you enjoyed this demonstration.
