Johnny depp painting demonstration using the wet in wet technique and here I
used a burnt umber diluted with turpentine to thin the paint and aid drying.
Starting a few inches below
the
top of the canvas I started to paint in the basic head shape and here it is
important for the placement of the head on the canvas. He is looking
out to the right in the photo that this painting was done from and his head
was slightly turned to the right so we put the head shape just to the left
of center so that he is looking into the canvas and not cut off by the edge
of it.
Here
all the basic head shape has been painted in albeit rather roughly but this
is how I work, you might be more careful.

I now start to paint in the dark tones where I see them using a scrubbing
action with the brush just to roughly get these areas in. No likeness is
even thought about as yet as this will come around three quarters way through
the portrait. I painted in a few strands of the hair using burnt umber and
ultramarine blue.
The
shadow areas of the right side of his face were added and the tone looks a
little on the purple side here but when I get the other colours down onto
canvas this colour will be muted.
All
the darker tones of the face, beard, moustache and hair are added now using burnt umber, alizarin crimson and a touch of ultramarine blue.
Here I have started to paint in the background with a thin mixture
of ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson and a touch of yellow ochre.
Middle
tones are added to the head scarf or do they call it a bandana by
painting in some of the darker colour into the light colour and visa versa
to achieve a blend, don't forget here we are using a wet in wet technique.
