A john Wayne sketch in pencil and sorry about the quality of the camera
work
I've no idea how some of these pictures turned out green and some
lighter but there you go. I started off at the top of the head and
worked downwards here.

Getting the correct alignment of the eyes right is important in
structuring the face, its no good having one eye up and the other one
slightly down to where it should be.

Notice the different line widths, some lines are thick, some thinner,
some lines are light some dark, this is automatic with the way I draw
and you should aim for this variety of line if you want life and
vitality in your sketching.

Darker shading around the eyes and hair goes in and the hair is done
by following the form of it, if hair looks like it is flowing from right
to left you use your pencil strokes from right to left, if the hair is
straight down you draw strokes straight down. It is a good idea to
follow the form of the face and hair.

The left side of the face goes in like his ear and hair, shading is
just suggested here and if the shading was drawn in fully the sketch
would lose a lot of its vitality so always keep shading to a minimum
when sketching.

The finished sketch and I hope you can see the quality of the sketch
here which apart from Mr Wayne himself the marks I have put down gives
him life and vitality and the shading helps to give a feeling of light
falling on is face.
