 How to draw hands

How to draw handsHow to draw hands continues by bringing the hands out to us more through tonal shading and line and more so with the hand underneath because this hand is nearer to us  I have started to lay in tone which is quite difficult to see because there are very subtle areas of light and dark here.

How to draw handsIt is best to know where the light is coming from so you know where the shadow needs to be on each finger and the light here is coming from above and from the right so we know to put shadows on the left of each finger. We are starting to go darker now in our shading.

How to draw hands

Once the basic shading is complete I started to concentrate on the shapes of the fingers, again checking to see if they were accurate and I was still having a bit of trouble with that thumb on the hand underneath but it will come with observation,  I also drew in a dark accent under the top wrist.

How to draw hands

Darker shading is now being drawn in and at the same time I'm trying to accent certain areas like the tip of the little finger of the top hand as this is closer to us than the rest of the fingers on this hand. A principle here is that the lights closer to us should be made a bit more lighter and the darks more darker than everything else that is further away from us, this will make the hands more three dimensional and they will have more depth.

How to draw hands

Starting to draw in more accents now between the fingers and trying to be a bit more accurate with the shading especially on top of the hands. There's plenty of form here where the raised veins and forms of the hands show light against the other tones of the of the hand.

How to draw hands

Here I have toned down the highlights of the forefinger of the top hand because it seemed to bring this finger forward too much and now I've done this it brings the little finger of the top hand out to us more. More darker accents like creases on the knuckles have been drawn in but don't go overboard on details because it can make your drawing lifeless and stiff. We hope you have enjoyed this how to draw hands tutorial.
