How to paint a mouth and as with the other features I
start off by using burnt umber for the initial painting in and start
to paint the mouth shape.
Using a mixture of cadmium red, yellow ochre and a touch of ultramarine blue I start to paint in the darker tones.
Because this person's head is turned away from us here slightly and has a slight grin the left corner of the mouth is higher than the right corner. It can be good to hold a pencil horizontally to check this angle.
More of the darker and middle tones are added and the line between the lips is painted in.
Because the middle of the mouth or centre of it comes out more to us than the left and right corners the line in between the lips can have a darker accent there to give the mouth a bit more dimension. An almost pure white is added for the highlight on the bottom lip.
The finished mouth and while it is only a basic mouth it shows the correct angle and you can tell that this person is holding a slight grin.
