A graded wash with watercolour is achieved by loading your brush with a
colour and using plenty of water and then laying the paint on the paper using
broad strokes as though you were painting a sky. After you have done this,
dip your brush into the water and then back into your palette of paint then
apply this paint to the paper where you left off again using broad strokes. Do
this same procedure a number of times and the colour will get lighter each
time you dip your brush in the water jar and apply the paint to your previous layer. When you get to almost
white paper put your brush into the water jar then without putting your brush
into your mix of colour apply the water to where you left off.
A graded
wash is one of the most common techniques in watercolour today and is
particularly used for sky's. You don't have to use just one colour you can
put down any colour and then use another different colour for your graded
wash.
Dry brush
Dry brush is attained by dipping your brush into water and then into your
paint supply and then dry your brush on a cloth or like I do on a towel so
that it is almost dry then apply the paint onto your paper lightly so your
brush is just touching the high points of the textured paper and leaving the
troughs of the paper untouched.
