Figure sketching in colour is more of a challenge to new artists who are just learning the art and it is totally different to drawing in black and white. If this was a black and white photograph the tone would be relatively easy to see but as it is a colour photograph we have to translate this tone into colour.
Here there is no initial drawing like I would do if the painting was for someone else, it is just a sketch so I can please myself what I do with the painting, I can make things wider or shorter, longer or thinner it really doesn't matter as long as the figure looks right.
Here the breasts have roughly been drawn in and are at the wrong angle to the shoulders at the moment but I will alter that later, the main thing is to get down as much as you can, minor alterations can be made later.
Most of the figure has been drawn in now and I have started to shade in using the same pastel colour throughout, the light is coming from above and from the right so everything on the left is in shadow.
So here all of the figure has been roughly drawn in with line and shadow, the chair has been painted in and you can see even at this point that everything is there that needs to be and I could save this painting as it is just as a rough sketch but I will carry on.
Now lights go in the light areas starting from the head and working down broadly and simply painting them in.
