Drawing with felt pens and with this medium you can only draw large areas of
tone with the point of the pen just like you would with pencil so you haven't got the broad
bands
of colour like you have with pastel or watercolours. I started off with the
funnel of the train just sketching it in with ordinary pencil first.
The
front dial of the train and the bumper bar at the front are added and I'm trying
to keep everything in line and correct.

The carriages are added next and perspective is important here.

Now I'm starting to draw with felt pens and I saw a box of forty pens at
a market for £3.99 so I though that's not a bad buy but when I got home the
pen holders which houses the pens were only just large enough for the pen to
go in so I kept catching the pen nib and hence the nibs are damaged now but
there you go you pay the price and you take your choice.

It is important to get the form of the tubular shape of the engine part
right so I used lines to describe this form.

The bumper bar is a bright red which is one thing that attracted me to
draw this train.
