Drawing in pencil lots of information here for you in drawing in pencil

Drawing in pencil isn't as hard as what you might think as long as you have the right materials to draw with anyone can draw. For all the pencil tutorials on this website I have used plain cartridge paper and can be bought in a pad or in separate sheets of A4 or A3 size. It is good to experiment on different papers and different textured surfaces as you can to find the paper that best suits your way and style of drawing and the effect that you want.

Drawing in pencil
Normal pencil grip
When you are drawing in pencil it is important in the way you hold your pencil, if you are sitting down with the pad on your lap it is best to hold the pencil between your forefinger and thumb just like you would with a pen. You can hold your pencil under your hand if you wish like in the second photo on the left but I myself find it a bit difficult to draw this way when sitting down.

Drawing in pencil
Under the hand
If you are standing up at an easel you can still hold the pencil the same way as you would a pen if you like, or you can hold the pencil under your hand which I prefer doing when standing up as it gives you more freedom. You can be a bit more freer and bolder this way rather than holding it like a pen which can make your drawing a bit tight. I use the under hand method if I am sketching loosely at an easel and I think it is the best method in learning how to draw, it helps you to be more relaxed and not tight in your drawing and I use the first method when I am sat down drawing or sketching.

We have our pencils and pad so now we can learn how to draw a portrait and the first principle in learning how to draw a portrait is the structure of the face, without structure your portrait will fall done just like a chair with no legs. The second most important principle is form and without form your portrait wont make any sense and it will be a mish mash drawing. The third principle in drawing in pencil is technique, that is the way you use your pencil to express the head and its features on the paper. All this will be revealed in the following demonstrations where we first concentrate on drawing all of the features one by one in detail and then going on to the actual portrait demonstrations.
