Drawing
a smile in charcoal and as with any drawing the shape is the
most
important thing and especially when drawing a smile so observe the top
and bottom lips for there individual shapes.

Next picking up charcoal from some scrap paper I blended in this on
the top and bottom lips leaving the highlight area on the bottom lip.

The line in between the lips isn't a continuous line but goes lighter
in parts but generally is darker at the corners.

You can see here that the line between the lips is broken and not a
continuous line and this also saves the mouth from looking like a cutout.

Using a putty rubber and here I'm using blue tac which is just as
good to pull out reflected lights in the upper lip.

The finished mouth at its simplest and here you can tell that this
child is smiling.
