When drawing a face
study the most important part is the gap between the eyes (Brow) if you don't get the spacing accurate here you will get cow eyes which aren't very complimentative, that is one eye drifting away from the other. Draw in the shapes of the lips and nostril more accurately and start to add shading to the left and right side of the face, if you half close your eyes you will be able to see all the tones of light and dark better.
I also started to make the features more prominent here so I darkened the eyes, eyebrows, nose and lips and the crease of the cheek. If you would like more instruction in how to draw the features of the face in detail please see how to draw portraits.
Now you can start drawing in some more shading down the left side of the face, the forehead and underneath the chin and behind the ear. Start by drawing in more shading in the hair, the cheek and lips. To get where the bottom and top of the ear should go in your portrait hold your pencil horizontally across the centre of the lips or the bottom of the lips to find where the bottom of the ear comes in and do the same to find the top of the ear. All your doing is holding the pencil at different points in the portrait to find where other points start and end in the portrait.
Here I am carrying on drawing the portrait by putting in more detail inside and around the ear with more shading, good observation is needed for the intricate shapes inside the ear so observation is the key. Concentrate on the shapes of the features more and put in some darker shading under the chin and ear to define these shapes.
We need to look and observe the angles and shapes and how they relate to each other otherwise the portrait will look disjointed. Put in more of her hair like the swirls and curls and follow the form with your pencil strokes, if hair strands are curving to the left or right follow these curves with your strokes. Add some more detail and shading in and around the ear, the lips and the bottom of the nose, add more darks if needed and keep the lights light to bring out the depth in the portrait.
Everything that's near to you can be made darker and lighter, this means the darks nearest us can be made darker and the lights nearest us can be made lighter and this will bring your portrait out to us more. Everything that's further away from you can be made fainter and less dark, this will make the portrait more three dimensional and will have more depth - and here we have the finished portrait sketch.
