 Dog painting demonstration

In this dog painting demonstration I first started off with an oval shape for the basic shape of the head, this is only a guide to get the drawing going. I Dog painting demonstrationdrew a light diagonal line down through the middle of the eyes (Brow) and through the centre of the nose to get the angle of the head. I then determined the distance between each eye being very careful to get this distance right otherwise the eyes wouldn't relate to each other.

Dog painting demonstrationI want to find the relative distances from the top of the head to the eye and from the eye to the bottom of the nose so I hold my pencil vertically and at arms length and measure the distance from the top of the head to the inside corner of the right eye. I then move this same measurement down starting from the inside corner of the right eye to the bottom of the nose and thus we can compare these distances. Once all the basic structure was in place I then began to put in basic shading using a medium burnt umber and using the side of the pastel to block in all the darkest areas of the portrait first.

Dog painting demonstrationNext I started blocking in areas where the light hits, the light was coming from above and from the right so the right side of the dogs face needs some lighter pastel shades. I used a light cerulean blue for the main highlight on the nose and forehead but not painting it in fully or as intensely as yet.

Dog painting demonstrationI then started on the medium tones where I blocked them in with a light cadmium red on the right and left side of the forehead and above and below both eyes.

Here I started to add more of the dogs fur on the left side and painted in some directional pastel strokes here to show where this form was going, most of these strokes wont be apparent in the finished portrait, I also put in more darks on the left ear and the right side of the nose.
