Dog drawn in pencil

Dog drawn in pencil demonstration and below is Dog drawn in pencilthe photo that I am drawing from and if you want to have a go in drawing from this photo yourself right click it and click save as.

Dog drawn in pencil

Here I had already lightly drawn in the dog to get all the forms and shapes correct. Drawing like any other medium is a build up of tones and colours, here obviously it is all about tone with no colour. I started my second round of tone with the eyes so I didn't lose them.

I drew both eyes in and then started shading in with normal diagonal strokes from right to left and at the same time adding little dark accents. It is a good idea to make little accents like this wherever they are on the subject because they act as markers throughout the portrait so you know where you are in the drawing.

Here more shading has been drawn in and I've put in the nose and dark nostrils. You don't have to stick to the lines you have already drawn in (underlying drawing), they are only guide lines so don't be afraid in drawing over the lines you have already put down if you think the drawing justifies it.

The eyes have been made darker and the dark rim around the lens of the eyes have been drawn in. Remember earlier when I said that I used diagonal shading for the first layer of tone well now I am using another form of shading and that is showing the form of the dogs hairs. So if hairs look to be going to the right I use my pencil to draw these hairs to the right , if they curve or bend I use my pencil the same way to indicate this.

A few other areas have been drawn in here and made darker especially the eyes and you can begin to see the form of these now. The best way to draw a dog with long curly hair in the ears is to look for the largest darks you can see and put these in taking care in how these shapes go.
