Depth and distance in landscapes is created by tone and line,
your darkest darks and brightest lights in the foreground and as the landscape recedes so the tones get fainter. Its the same with line, darker thicker lines in the foreground and less darker and thinner lines as you go further back in the landscape.
Here the distant walls in the fields are added and more lights were lifted
out in the trees using a putty rubber.
Here I am drawing the landscape and as you can see
here the drawing isn't that large and because charcoal sticks are thick you
can draw a lot larger than that what I am drawing here.
To shape up the drawing a bit and to clean up the edges to the buildings I use a charcoal pencil.
The roadway has had a layer of tone filled in and it has been blended at the bottom of the road, nearer to us it has been left as texture to give depth. The walls at the bottom of the road have been made into horizontals because I felt that the overhaul composition needed
this, never be afraid to alter your drawing if you feel it is right and helps your composition.
You still feel as though it is uphill here and that you can go down it only you don't know what's around the bend at the bottom, this also leads your eye to the big house. The wall on the left has been made higher giving more perspective to the landscape, even the little S shape in the distant walls leads your eye to the centre of interest,
the house! This drawing only took around an hour to do but it shows what you can achieve.
