Creating a mood in charcoal

Creating a mood in charcoal and here it is of an old house with a foreground and distant landscape. I first started with the horizon line and drew a line Creating a mood in charcoalthree quarters up the page so there wont be much sky in this composition, the main centre of interest is of the old house.

Creating a mood in charcoal

More of the houses and trees are added and it is best not to copy faithfully what you see from photographs or from life instead try to make good harmonious shapes that go well together. You can keep to the general idea and essential elements of your photo or from life but if the composition can be improved then all the better. Here I lowered the horizon line so more of the dark top part of the house would show up more against the lighter sky.

Creating a mood in charcoal

I started filling in areas with charcoal starting off with the chimney at the top of the house.

Creating a mood in charcoalYou can see that already there is contrast here although no sky has been filled in yet.

Creating a mood in charcoalHere I filled in some trees with dark charcoal and then picked up this charcoal with my finger and used it to blend in the roofs on the left. This is a good idea for areas that don't need too darker areas, here for instance in the sky.

Creating a mood in charcoalYou can use scrap paper and loading it with charcoal and then lift it off the charcoal with your little finger.
