Castle hill painting demonstration and below is the photo of castle hill which is a Victorian tower in Huddersfield west Yorkshire and I'm painting the scene in oil paints from a photograph. It isn't a really good photo here and the clouds are a little too light so they will be tuned down in the painting.

I started off with painting in the horizon line which is two thirds up from the bottom of the canvas and is painted in with ultramarine and cerulean blue and I use this colour for all the underpainting. There is no particular reason in using this mixture but the sky is blue and there is blue in green so why not, I could have used burnt umber.

The distant hills including castle hill tower is painted in and I am composing the picture as I go on here. There has been no planning by drawing initial sketches so you have to feel the shapes you put down so they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Read more about composition in art if you want to learn more about shapes.

I carry on painting in the bushes in the middle ground and the trees in the foreground

The initial line painting has been finished now so the tonal values are all painted in next. It is best to half close your eyes to your subject matter so you will be able to see the tonal values better.
All the tonal values have been laid in now and the cloud shapes have been roughly painted in, here I left the whites of the clouds unpainted so I know where they are.
