Blending charcoal with your finger

Blending charcoal with yourfingerBlending charcoal with a finger in a circular motion taking off charcoal from the scrap of paper.

Blending charcoal with your fingerHere I'm just roughly filling in the tree and bush areas.

Blending charcoal with your fingerThe big tree in front of the house is laid in here and it is important to have contrast in any form of drawing or painting. Later on this will be made darker for more contrast and tonal perspective against the house.

Blending charcoal with your fingerThe pointed roof at the left of the main house met the horizon line which felt very insensitive so I made it higher and now it is above the horizon line. Doing this achieves two things, one depth through overlapping planes and two contrast. The distant landscape was filled in and blended with my finger by picking up charcoal from the trees, the trees that I picked up charcoal from can be filled in again later.

Blending charcoal with your fingerThe roof of the house has been made darker giving greater contrast with the sky and more darks are added to the trees and bushes.

Blending charcoal with your fingerHere most of the middle distant trees and bushes have been filled in with darks. You now get the feeling that the road is going downhill and the wall in the left foreground is important in attaining this. Lights to the trees are added with a putty rubber.
