Bird Painting tutorial using pastel lots of information in this bird painting tutorial |
 | Here I am going straight out to paint a bird in pastel with no initial basic drawing and this bird was painted on blue fabriano pastel paper and using Windsor and Newton soft pastels. I first started to paint the bill of the bird by painting in colour as I saw it and with careful observation of the angle of the bill and its colour. | | |
 | I then moved naturally onto the head with a pale colbalt blue, the eye was placed in a natural diagonal alignment with the bill and I think here you have to watch the distance from the left end of the bill to the start of the eye otherwise the eye will look like it isn't related to the birds bill. |
 | Here I carried on to the body and its breast parts blocking in colour as I saw it with a bright burnt sienna. We need to watch out for proportions here like the size of the head to the rest of the body so using the pencil to measure these proportions is helpful, I'm also putting in the insect that the bird has caught in its bill. |
 | Still painting in colour and tone I painted in the splash of white on the left of the orange eye stripe, I also started on the branch that the bird is standing on. It is very important to get the angle of the branch right so it looks as though the bird is really standing on the branch, good observation of the angles of the legs to the branch are needed here. |
 | I've darkened the bird's bill and started to put in other bird markings like on top of the bird's head and I've also started to put in a basic colour of sap green for the branch. |
 | More markings on the bird are apparent like along the bird's wing and crown (Head) and a cooler colour has been added underneath the wing to bring it out a little because this part is nearest us. I have also started to paint in more tone and colour in the branch.
