Asian man in oils and this is the photo that I'm painting from, an old man with a beard and here he has a reddish complexion so I need to capture this in the painting.
The basic lines are painted in for his head shape using a diluted burnt umber.

The line down the centre of the face is the axis of the head where it comes down from the centre of the forehead, nose mouth and chin.

Everything is painted in roughly to get an idea of the portrait, the beard is suggested for now and I started painting in the darks.

After the darks were painted in I started with a thin diluted colour for the middle tones of the face made up of cadmium red, ultramarine blue and yellow ochre.

All the basic middle tones of the face are painted in now and is hat is also roughly painted in. His eyebrows go in next made up of the same three colours only darker.

More of the beard is painted and his jacket goes in made up of alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and burnt umber. Notice I have left light areas throughout the portrait to show where these areas are going to be, you can get a better impression of the whole painting leaving these areas untouched.
